“Server Unavailable”

Do you have normal internet access but still get this error? Yeah, me too.

A screenshot of the Dexcom follow app with the following error message: Server Unavailable. There is a temporary error with the Dexcom server. Please try again.

There are plenty of reports online showing that there is an issue with the Android Dexcom Follow app. Folks reference that changing the region or language of their Android device fixes the problem. Why is this? Likely it’s a bug with the internationalization code of the app (the code that is responsible for providing different text based on what language your system has selected).

It seems that Dexcom has opted to show a “server unavailable” error if the language doesn’t match that of the app, instead of providing an actually useful message.

The Solution

Depending on the brand and model of Android phone you may either need to update the region or language in settings to match the language of the Google Play store where you downloaded the app. I downloaded the Dexcom Follower app from the UK Google Play store but have my phone’s language set to English (US). Let’s install the English (UK) system language.

On my google Pixel searching “language” in settings allows you to select “System” -> “Languages” -> “System languages” -> “Add a language”.

Android language settings page showing where you can add a system language.

After setting my default language to match that of the Google Play store, I can open the app no problem.

The Dexcom app working, landing on the page to choose your region.

Ater opening the app sucessfully, it looks like you can even go back to your original system language. Just be expected that you may need to do this again if you clear your app data.

Some phones do have the ability to set a Language on a per app basis. That may be another option for you.
